normcore- a fashionista's nightmare

I live in Melbourne and Melbourne is a city that loves wearing black. And good coffees. And tattoos. Therefore it is no surprise that there is a big scene for hipsters- those freelancing, vintage-wearing, soy-latte sipping people that dress following a certain aesthetic, so that you can tell them apart from everybody else. However times have changed- it's 2014 now, every mainstream clothing company spits out vintage inspired collections, your 14 year old nephew owns a leather jacket and cropped chinos and coconut water is the new soy milk. If, like me, you were never a hipster to start with, you now gotten the memo: times have changed. It is no longer desirable to be different. To own clothes your grandmother could have worn, grow a beard, get or get a tattoo turned out to be a farce. Too many tried to be too cool, so now being cool is not cool, unless, of course, you are one of the new cool kids. The ones that don't try at all. The ones that are happy to blend in, wear unisex, uniform, universally accepted clothes.

Normcore is a trend that isn't a trend. Normcore is wearing an outfit your partners' parents would approve of. Normcore is not spending ridiculous amounts of money on trends that change with every season. In short: normcore is a fashionista's nightmare.
When looking at the industry's key editor's clothing choices, you will find that each of them has their signature style, a few pieces that will change with each season, but essentially be the same. Examples following:

                                                                         Emmanuelle Alt's love for blazers

Anna Wintour's preference for sunglasses and ability to mix prints

Anna Dello Russo's famous head-to-toe of the runway looks

The pattern: find a style that suits you. Do it differently every season, but stay true to yourself. You won't have to throw away everything you own every other season, you won't spend stupid amounts of time and money and it'll be harder to label you as a hipster, normcorer or whatever subculture you previously though was cool. Because trendsetters don't change their style to be cool, they just are.
