I met Model Faro Musodza at a fashion show for The Social Studio in 2012. Since then the Zimbabwean beauty has been on numerous catwalks and editorials- follow her on facebook and instagram to keep up to date with her amazing work.
1. When and how did you start modelling?
I started modelling when I was 14. Because I often kept to myself, my mother’s friends suggested that I attend modelling and deportment classes to build up my confidence. It was really enjoyable and I found it worth pursuing, so after finishing high school, I got into modelling full time whilst studying and have kept at it ever since.
2. Which advice would you give your younger self and what do you wish someone had told you before you started modelling?
I'd tell myself to exercise patience and trust my intuition.
I wish someone had told me there are different modelling genres. When I started modelling in Zimbabwe, I got the impression that modelling involved photo shoots only. When I moved to Australia, with more access to the internet, I learned that there are varying types of modelling suited to different looks.
3. How do you find the modelling industry as a model of color in Australia?
Australia can afford to be more diverse and should learn to see the beauty in all different nationalities. I find that all dark skinned models are said to look the same, which is flat out xenophobic. Looking at it on a large scale, this country is growing each day and that has an effect on “the look” of Australia. And "the look" is certainly not exclusively Anglo-Saxon.
I just want to feel that I can be represented in all facets of art, culture and community and more importantly in modelling nationally and globally.
4. How do you stay fit and what are your go-to foods?
I did track and basketball in high school, so naturally I am drawn to cardio workouts. I enjoy running and swimming and I take occasional group classes like Body pump, Pilates or anything new being offered. Love to switch it up! I cannot think of any particular "go to foods"- however I generally eat a palm size portion of protein, lots of green and seasonal vegetables and my go to carbohydrate is SADZA (maize meal). It forms part of the Zimbabwean staple diet and it is low GI. I just can't keep up with all the food trends ha! When I feel adventurous, I do try them out.
5. Who do you look up to for inspiration?
Three models come to mind; I love Naomi for her longevity in the modelling world. Elle McPherson is just effortlessly super chic! Philomena Kwao, she reminds me of the women I grew up with and seeing her in modelling reassures me that the tide is changing for the better. Hard work and resourcefulness inspire me. If you have those two things it equates to success regardless of your circumstances.
6. What are you especially proud of?
I'm proud of strongly believing in myself and trusting my intuition and spirituality. I have managed to be patient in times when I thought I was not going anywhere, but my progress has not been fruitless. I have successfully laid my foundation and my career is now taking shape.
