What would you tell your younger self?

One question I love to ask is what advice you'd give your younger. Here some answers from some of my favourite interviews.

Stop trying to please everyone. And stop trying to be everyone else.
It's really hard to get caught up in, not only the photographers that are around you, but also the photographers that you idolise. I wish I could go back and just tell myself that I needn't worry about trying to be too much like James White, Patrick Demarchelier or Lara Jade - that I should just focus on my own style, no matter how much that changes.
    - Yasitha Armarasinghe

I'd tell myself to exercise patience and trust my intuition.
    -Faro Musodza

Probably just to stop thinking and shoot more and to be confident and open to meeting people
    - Mel Jean

    Vitamin BS

by Wanda Waller, our beauty columnist
Bio Oil is another product that didn’t really do much for me, it didn’t make my skin worse like Lucas’ papaw did, I just haven’t seen any changes or improvements because of it. I never understood why is it so expensive as the main ingredient is mineral oil (even though they tried to hide that fact under the fancy “paraffinum liqidum” label). I definitely don’t think that mineral oil is unnatural or toxic; first of all it is natural, as most often, mineral oil is a liquid by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum-based products from crude oil. But just because it is natural, it doesn’t mean it is good for you! Second of all I don’t believe its toxic if it’s used in its most purified form that meats all the purity and safety standards, however, I definitely think it’s shouldn’t be used frequently on the skin or as a base for a moisturizer. In my opinion mineral oil and petroleum should be only used in barrier creams and be clearly labeled as such, so the consumer knows exactly that they are getting!

Back to the bio-oil, the ingredient list is very interesting and very long, it’s like they tried to make it sound as complicated as they could, so no one would even be bother to read it.

“Bio Oil contains 29 ingredients of which four are plant extracts found in almost every body product on the market, two are vitamins used in a lot of cosmetic formulas, the main ingredient is mineral oil and everything else is slip agents, fillers, fragrance or dyes”. The number of artificial fragrance ingredients is worrying as there is 12 in total plus 1 synthetic ingredient responsible for the orange color. “There is not one significant ingredient to improve scarring that cannot be found in numerous formulas for less money” (quoted from: http://www.yummymummyclub.ca/blogs/dan-thompson-beauty-busted/20120831/bio-oil-busted)

6 questions with Kathleen Sheahan, make-up artist

Kathleen Sheahan is a Melbourne based make-up artist, part of the HUB team and offers a variety of make-up services- from bridal to fashion, body art and theatre.

    1. How did you become a make-up artist?
I had just finished a three year Bachelor of International Studies and was feeling quite lost. Having always being interested in the arts I stumbled upon an Open Day for the Academy and never looked back. I enrolled in the Diploma straight away and six months later I was a qualified makeup artist!

    No Bobby Socks

GOOD NEWS: We now accept submissions! First up "No Bobby Socks" by photographer Kayt Silvers
    Hair and Makeup: Grace Soto
Model: Clara Rose Ulken @Maggie Inc.

This shoot was actually a sort of funeral for the polka dot dress. My mom had made it for me some years ago, and though I'd always considered it special, it had never really fit me right. I went to iron it one day to try again, and I realized the spots were running. Knowing the dress was on it's last legs, I quickly threw together a few other outfits and my mom's old saddle shoes and scheduled the rockabilly-themed shoot really last minute. Clara, Grace and I spent almost a whole day capturing these images, which in the end involved some illicit shooting in an old movie theater, digging up a vintage coke bottle from my basement, hunting down balloons, and a drinking a large root beer float. It was pretty much just luck that it turned out as well as it did. Mostly we were all just having a lot of fun -Kayt Silvers
